How do your images make you feel? Is there a favorite?

"We love our pictures! There is not a bad one in the bunch. We love looking through them and reliving the day. Our favorites are hard to choose but as a whole, we love the fact that there were so many candid shots of the people who attended our wedding because we didn’t get to see everyone and so it was good to have photos of them and see everyone having a great time smiling and laughing." - Brock and Savannah

How did the two of you meet?

"We met through Facebook technically a little over 2 years ago. I’m from the Blountville area, currently living in Kingsport. He is from Pennington gap, Va. we were friends on Facebook for months before he messaged me. We had some mutual friends. I didn’t date much... like didn’t date or go on dates with anyone for 6 years before I met him. I wanted to buy a house and career establish and was waiting for the right guy. His message was sweet and grammatically correct which stood out from other guys and so I responded. We went on a dinner date on a Thursday. I thought it would be about an hour and was a 3.5-hour date and was so easy and flowed. I work in Big Stone Gap which is close to where he grew up so it was like God’s hand at work. My family instantly loved him and I love his mom and family so much too." - Savannah

"My favorite detail was a sweet detail most wouldn’t have noticed. I had my necklace intertwined in my bouquet that was from my papaw Jerry that he had given to my mamaw on their 25th wedding anniversary. It had her initials on it and a message from him." - Savannah

What was your favorite moment or moments on your wedding day?

"One of my favorite moments was waiting to walk down the aisle and seeing a packed cathedral with all the family and friends we love there to celebrate us. Also together, we feel like the Vows we wrote and delivered to one another were a favorite because we had not shared anything and just hearing them and delivering them in front of everyone was a sweet moment." -Savannah

Describe how you felt & what was racing through your mind when you saw one another for the first time.

"We both were a little nervous and anxious as we had not shared any details about what Savannah was wearing, makeup, or how the hair would be for that day. All the anxiousness built up but when the doors opened it was a relief and just excitement to get married."

"JJ’s Catering was so accommodating as we had some guest allergies. They truly went above and beyond to make sure everyone was going to be fed. They are located in Abingdon and also have a restaurant.

Makeup: Taylor Haun is someone I have been going to for many years since she started. She works at Black heart salon and is wonderful. She is professional and makes you look natural.

Hair: Britney McMahan and Christie Turner they both work at Colour Rage in Blountville, TN. They finished early and made us all look wonderful. Our hair lasted all night which is a feat in itself.

Wedding dress: Bristol Bridal Station is a great organization. They are the sweetest and there was no pressure with choosing a dress. We got the dress, veil, and earrings there.

Photographer: April Booher was amazing. I reached out to her at the beginning because her photos are so bright and natural. I don’t like super edited photos and she captured the best quality with brightness and looking natural. She was great and made sure we had everything we wanted.

Videographer- Taylor Lewis from Heartstrings. She is fun and vibrant and made it feel natural. She included all my family and nephews and made them feel important. I’m so excited and glad to have a videographer because we miss half the day while waiting for the ceremony.

Cake- Meredith Mumpower. She made our 3 favorite flavors almond, cookies and cream, and a creamsicle cake. She went above and beyond for us and it all turned out amazing.

Wedding Venue: Rose Hill Weddings took care of everything for us. They have experience and it shows and relieved so much stress the day of.

Fina florals did our bouquets and went off a picture. They were exactly what we wanted.

We loved all our wedding vendors and are so appreciative to all of them for making our day perfect for us!"

Should you have a wedding day first look?

As your wedding day approaches, you’re probably wondering whether you want first look wedding photos or you want to wait until you walk down the aisle to see the love of your life. If your immediate reaction to the idea of doing a first look is absolutely not, you’re not alone. Clients often tell me “no” right away. However, after learning more about what a first look is and where the tradition of seeing each other for the first time at the altar really comes from, many have changed their minds.

With my many years of experience photographing countless weddings, I do recommend first look bride and groom sessions.

However, it is your wedding day and it should be everything that YOU have been dreaming of! Don't forget that when you are in the planning process! :) I will support your choice and create beautiful images for you whether you decide to have a first look session or wait until you are walking down your wedding ceremony aisle.

Here are 6 reasons why I think you should consider saying YES

to a pre-ceremony first look sneak peek with your future spouse.

1) Your hair, makeup, and flowers will look their best!

Doing a first look prior to the ceremony ensures that your hair, makeup, and flowers will be as fresh as possible in your wedding portraits.

2) Doing a first look can help calm your wedding day jitters!

Brides have told me that seeing their fiancé prior to the ceremony helped them feel so much better before their walk down the aisle. Taking portraits after your ceremony can be distracting since you’ll be focused on getting to your reception and celebrating with guests. Doing a first look earlier in the day will help you to remain fully present and allow you to truly enjoy the wedding day that you have been planning for so long.

3) You'll get to your cocktail hour earlier!

Your wedding day shouldn’t be all about taking photos. You want to be able to spend time with guests, too!

If you don’t do a first look, you’ll need to set aside at least an hour and 15 minutes after the ceremony to take family photos, group bridal party pictures, and bride and groom portraits. Couples who choose not to do a first look often start to feel stressed out, as post-ceremony pictures can take quite a bit of time away from being with guests and enjoying your wedding day.

If you DO choose to do a first look, you'll only need to set aside about 30 minutes after your ceremony for group wedding party pictures and family photos. Then you’ll be able to attend part of your cocktail hour and enjoy more time with guests!

4) Doing a first look does not break tradition.

Traditionally the real reason brides and grooms were kept from seeing each other until the ceremony is because the bride’s family did not want to risk a groom breaking off the wedding if he didn’t like the way she looked! The true roots of this custom aren’t quite as romantic as we thought.

5) First looks allow time to really enjoy each other while also allowing your wedding photographer to capture the truly spectacular and emotional bride and groom portraits you've dreamed of.

A first look is private and intimate, giving you the opportunity to experience the moment together without the pressure of everybody at your ceremony watching you.

6) You’ll provide an overall better experience for you and your wedding guests.

What was your favorite moment or moments on your wedding day?

"My favorite moment was getting to hold Zack’s hand before the wedding. And him singing our last song “heaven” by Kane Brown to me at the end of the night. I’m glad we were able to take time for us on a crazy day. I’ll remember that forever."

Derek & Kaitlyn's Engagement Session at Beauty Spot, Erwin TN

The weather at Beauty Spot is always so unpredictable and it did not disappoint on the day I photographed their engagement session. We left Johnson City with clear skies, drove up the mountain and arrived to heavy cloud cover, fog and chilling wind, then the sky opened up for a beautiful blue sky mountain view (see last photo)... to some that sounds awful but to a photographer that sounds amazing! I am looking forward to their upcoming wedding at Harvest Acres in Limestone TN.

Engagement photos beauty spot Erwin

How did the two of you met?
"We met at Etsu! We both studied microbiology and the first time we met was in micro club. (Yes we’re giant nerds)! We dated for a year and 2 months. We’ve been engaged for about 4 months. He asked me by totally surprising me at my apartment. When I came home there were rose petals all over the floor. He and my roommate planned all of this out and it was absolutely perfect." -Kaitlyn

When was the moment you knew you were meant to marry each other?

Derek's answer - I knew early on that I wanted to marry Kaitlyn; I think it was around April which was just 2 months after we started dating. I could tell that she was the one made for me, that she was my soul mate.

Kaitlyn's answer - I knew very early into our relationship that Derek was the one I was supposed to marry. The more we talked the more interests and personality traits we discovered we shared. It was pretty obvious that we were made for each other.

What are 3 qualities you admire about each other?

Derek's answer - I love how considerate Kaitlyn is - She constantly is checking on me, making sure I'm okay and I love that; it makes me feel special. I love how she loves me - She shows me everyday how much she loves me and it always reminds me how lucky I am to have her in my life. She is so funny - She makes me laugh and smile daily; If I am having a rough day she will brighten it up instantly.

Kaitlyn's answer - Derek is so supportive of me. He is always my shoulder to lean on no matter the circumstance. He also encourages me in everything I do and is my biggest fan. He has the biggest heart. He cares so much about everyone and always puts others first. Derek is my partner in crime. I can trust that he will always be on my side. I'm pretty sure he knows me better than I know myself.

"We chose Harvest Acres in Limestone Tennessee. What drew us to our wedding venue choice was that Harvest Acres is rustic but elegant. We love that it’s back off the road and how beautiful the property is. The barn is also just a few miles away from where we live!" - Derek & Kaitlyn
